432 Indiana St

Located in Lawrence’s historic Pickney Neighborhood, 432 Indiana Street brings a modern, sustainable home to an overgrown lot near downtown. This site, partially encroached by a flood zone, overcomes its challenge by utilizing a secluded feel with a forested backyard.
The design respects the scale of neighboring homes with a two-story, gabled roof and a narrow building footprint. Inside, the 1,500 SF residence features a grand entrance leading to the kitchen, framed by louvered curtain walls that allow abundant natural light throughout the year. The dark exterior facade pairs harmoniously with warm wood accents on the louvers and deck, creating a seamless connection between the exterior and interior finishes. This design language flows through the house, extending into the hallway, bedrooms, bathrooms, and an upstairs loft. Above the detached garage, a small 500 SF accessory dwelling unit adds living flexibility and rental potential, supporting density and reducing urban sprawl.
Achieving LEED Platinum certification, this project aligns with Lawrence’s sustainable development goals, addressing housing shortages and prioritizing infill over expansion in the city’s Horizon 2040 plan.

Studio 804 is a comprehensive studio option at The University of Kansas for students fulfilling a Master of Architecture degree. Each year students are given the opportunity to design and construct a building in Lawrence, Kansas from start to finish Students are involved in every phase of construction with opportunities to gain hands-on experiential opportunities.
As a Studio 804 student, I was responsible for designing and building the kitchen in the main house and the kitchenette in the ADU. This process involved conducting multiple design charrettes, selecting materials/appliances, estimating costs, creating detailed shop drawings, producing mockups, and executing the final build.
